What is it?
• Practice of Aromatherapy: Applied Aromatherapy (inc. massage and other methods of use), working with other healthcare professionals, referral, treatment planning, therapeutic communication, adaptation of skillslog/case studies and reflective practice
• Theory of Aromatherapy; basic botany, taxonomy and nomenclature, secondary plant metabolism, therapeutic properties of essential oils, contraindications and precautions of external use, plant origins, biosynthesis, methods of production, shelf-life, storage and handling, carrier oil research and use, dilution ratios, patch testing, safety data, purchasing, labelling requirements, environmental considerations, physical and emotional uses of essential oils and knowledge of basic chemistry relevant to safe and informed practice.
• Assess clients needs; Select blend & verify essential oils and carriers for treatment and record selection correctly
• Massage and manipulate soft body tissue to enhance oil absorption and stimulate the natural healing process
• Treat clients with essential oils and oil blends through massage and other methods such as compresses, inhalations and preparing creams/lotions etc. for home use
• Review the effectiveness of aromatherapy programmes with clients and aftercare advice
• Study essential oils/absolutes and carrier media in detail
• Anatomy, physiology and pathology
• Professional Studies Legislation, Conduct & Ethics, Business Studies, Legal framework, Health & Safety, First Aid
• Accounting, Marketing Reflective Practice, the importance of belonging to a professional association, Understanding Research
In addition to the class contact hours you will be required to study a further 600 hours independently. Due to the nature of the industry and the course, students are expected to be polite, pleasant and enthusiastic. You will have to deal with the public on a daily basis
